Fair Work Act 2009 and single-day medical certificates
Under the Fair Work Act 2009, employees can generally be asked by their employer to provide evidence when taking paid personal leave, including for a single day. A medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner is one common form of evidence that employers may accept.
DoctorsNote issues medical certificates that are valid under the Fair Work Act 2009. For a single day of leave, this can help you meet your employer’s evidence requirements when they request documentation to support your absence.
The Fair Work Act 2009 does not prescribe the specific format of a medical certificate, but employers will usually want to see:
- That the certificate is from a registered medical practitioner.
- The date(s) of the period being certified (for example, a single day).
- Clear identification of the practitioner and their registration details.
The certificates issued through DoctorsNote include the doctor’s details and are designed to function as evidence for personal or sick leave in a way that is consistent with the Fair Work Act 2009. Your employer’s internal policies and procedures still apply, and it is your responsibility to follow them when submitting the certificate.
