Why I only do medical certificates

A medical certificate is a doctor's word, in writing — so I do only this, and I do it properly.

I'm Dr Rupinder Singh Walia. For a general telehealth service, a medical certificate is an afterthought — a document bolted onto a consult or a script for something else. There's no reason for them to build proper verification, keep audit-ready records, or hold every certificate to one standard, because certificates aren't the business.

For me, they're the entire business — and that changes how they're made. Because the certificate is the product, the assessment and the record behind it are built to withstand scrutiny, not rushed to clear a queue. Because my name is on every one, each is signed by someone with something to lose if it doesn't hold up.

A certificate isn't finished the day it's issued. It can be read months or years later by an employer, an auditor, or an insurance company assessing a claim. So I built the accountability, governance and verification a generalist has no reason to: one named doctor who reviews and decides every certificate, a full audit trail under our CASI clinical governance, and independent verification your employer can run in seconds.

Specialising isn't a claim about us. It's the reason the documentation is done correctly.

Sick certificate online or medical certificate online?

In Australia, people often use the terms sick certificate, sick note, doctor certificate and medical certificate to mean the same type of evidence: a registered practitioner has assessed you and confirmed you were unfit for work or study on the dates listed.

If your employer asks for a sick certificate online, this medical certificate online form is the right application pathway for a short sick leave certificate. Choose the work/sick leave option, enter the day or two days you need covered, and Dr Walia reviews the application within 24 hours.

The issued document uses medical certificate wording, includes Dr Walia’s AHPRA registration details, and carries a QR verification code so an employer can confirm authenticity without seeing your diagnosis. The assessment fee for a one- or two-day sick leave certificate is $14.95.

What is a medical certificate?

A medical certificate is a document issued by a registered doctor confirming that you are unfit for work or study for a specific period. Employers and universities commonly require it as evidence when you take leave due to illness.

You can apply for a medical certificate online in Australia without visiting a clinic. Dr Walia reviews each application within 24 hours and issues a certificate only when clinically appropriate. The $14.95 assessment fee covers a requested period of one or two days, and the service is available in every Australian state and territory.

In Australia, an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner may issue a medical certificate after an appropriate assessment, including an online assessment. Fair Work identifies medical certificates as one form of evidence and applies a reasonable-person standard. Individual employers may also have lawful evidence requirements under workplace policies, awards or agreements.

A valid medical certificate typically includes the practitioner’s name and registration number, the dates of unfitness, and a statement that the patient is unfit for their normal duties. It does not need to disclose the specific diagnosis or medical condition. This applies whether you’re in Perth, Adelaide, or anywhere else in Australia.

If you need a 2 day medical certificate online, choose the two-day period in the current application. The assessment fee remains $14.95 whether you request one or two consecutive days. Payment starts a clinical review; it does not guarantee issue, and Dr Walia may recommend a different form of care when an online certificate is not appropriate.

Why DoctorsNote — the four things that make a certificate hold up

GP

One accountable doctor.

Every certificate is read, assessed and decided by Dr Rupinder Singh Walia — FRACGP, 28 years of clinical practice across two countries. Not a rotating pool of anonymous doctors. One identified GP whose clinical responsibility stays with every certificate.

AT

Built-in governance.

Every certificate is clinically reviewed and logged in our governance system (CASI), creating an audit trail. It is built to hold up months or years later — to an employer, a Fair Work dispute, a legal review, or an insurer assessing a claim.

QR

Independent verification.

Every certificate carries a unique reference number and QR code. Your employer can confirm it is genuine in seconds at our verification page — without seeing your medical details. Learn how to spot a fake and how DoctorsNote verification confirms a real one.

NO

Integrity — no backdating.

Dated the day it is written, never backdated — in line with AMA guidance, the Fair Work Act 2009 and Medical Board of Australia expectations. If you need evidence for past dates, see what to do instead.

Privacy

Will my employer see my diagnosis?

No. Medical certificates confirm that you were unfit for work or study on specific dates. They do not disclose your diagnosis, symptoms, or treatment details. Your employer receives only the information required under the Fair Work Act — that a registered practitioner has assessed you and confirmed your unfitness for the relevant period.

This applies equally to physical illness and mental health leave. If you are taking leave for stress, anxiety, or depression, your certificate states unfitness for work without specifying the underlying condition.

Frequently asked questions about medical certificates online

What is a medical certificate?
A medical certificate is a document issued by an AHPRA-registered Australian GP confirming a patient was assessed and found unfit for work, study, or required to provide care on specified dates. It is accepted as evidence under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).
Can an online medical certificate be used in Australia?
A medical certificate issued after an appropriate assessment by an AHPRA-registered Australian GP can be provided as evidence whether the assessment occurred online or in person. Fair Work requires evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and workplace requirements may also apply.
How long is a medical certificate valid for?
A medical certificate covers the dates specified by the issuing GP — typically 1 to 2 days for short-term absences. The certificate itself does not expire; it serves as evidence for the specific date range it covers.
Can my employer reject a medical certificate from an online GP?
An employer should not reject medical evidence solely because the assessment occurred online. Fair Work requires evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and employers may also apply lawful workplace policies. DoctorsNote certificates identify the reviewing GP and include a QR verification code so authenticity can be checked.
Can my employer verify a medical certificate?
Yes. DoctorsNote certificates carry a unique reference number and QR code linking to an independent verification page. Employers can confirm authenticity in under 10 seconds at doctorsnote.com.au/verify/. Employers can also confirm a certifying GP’s AHPRA registration on the public AHPRA register.
Can I get a backdated medical certificate?
No. DoctorsNote does not issue backdated medical certificates. Every certificate reflects the date of the GP’s clinical assessment — the day the application is submitted. Backdated certificates are not consistent with AHPRA clinical and legal standards.
What does a medical certificate include?
A valid Australian medical certificate includes the patient’s name, the dates of unfitness, the issuing GP’s name, and the GP’s AHPRA registration number. DoctorsNote certificates also include a unique reference number and QR code for employer verification. The certificate does not disclose the patient’s diagnosis under the Australian Privacy Principles.
How quickly can I get a medical certificate online?
Applications are reviewed within 24 hours by Dr Rupinder Singh Walia (AHPRA MED0001647256). If approved as clinically appropriate, the certificate is delivered by email. The assessment costs $14.95 for a requested period of one or two days.
How do I know my certificate wasn’t auto-generated?
Every DoctorsNote certificate is reviewed and approved by Dr Walia personally. Your application gets a clinical assessment, not an algorithm. The certificate includes your reference number, which you can verify on our site — the system logs who reviewed it and when.
Can my employer verify the certificate was clinically reviewed?
Yes. Scan the QR code on your certificate or enter your reference number on our verify page. The system confirms Dr Walia reviewed it, includes the date issued, and shows it’s audit-ready.
What’s the difference between a named doctor and a rotating pool model?
A named doctor means one GP is responsible for every review. You know who assessed your certificate. A rotating pool spreads responsibility across many doctors — each certificate might be reviewed by a different person. DoctorsNote uses a single named GP (Dr Rupinder Singh Walia) for full accountability.
Why does DoctorsNote refuse to backdate certificates?
Certificates should be dated the day the GP wrote them. Backdating undermines the integrity of the document and raises questions in Fair Work disputes or legal review. We date every certificate on the day of clinical review.
What happens if my employer disputes the certificate?
DoctorsNote keeps a full audit trail: the date you applied, the date Dr Walia reviewed it, the reference number, and the QR verification code. If Fair Work or a court needs proof the certificate was genuinely issued, this trail is your evidence.
Is a GP-reviewed certificate stronger defensively than an instant online option?
A named GP’s clinical review creates accountability and a clear audit trail, which makes a GP-reviewed certificate easier to stand behind if it’s ever questioned. DoctorsNote’s model — one named GP, clinical review, audit trail — is built to be defensible.
Can I check if my certificate has an audit trail?
Yes — verify your certificate via the QR code or reference number on our verify page. The system shows the certificate number, the date of clinical review, and confirmation that Dr Walia approved it.
Is a doctor’s certificate the same as a medical certificate?
Yes. ‘Medical certificate’, ‘doctor’s certificate’ and ‘sick note’ all describe the same thing — written confirmation from an AHPRA-registered doctor that you are unfit for work or study.
How many sick days can I take without a medical certificate?
Under the Fair Work Act 2009, an employer can require evidence for any period of sick or carer’s leave, and many ask for a medical certificate from the first day. Workplace policies vary, so check your agreement or contract.
Can I apply for a medical certificate on weekends or public holidays?
Yes. You can submit the application at any time, including weekends and public holidays. Dr Walia reviews applications within 24 hours and emails the certificate if clinically appropriate.
Can I get a 2 day medical certificate online?
You can apply online for a medical certificate covering one or two consecutive days. The assessment costs $14.95 for either duration. Dr Walia reviews the application within 24 hours and decides whether the requested dates are clinically appropriate. DoctorsNote does not issue certificates for more than two days through this pathway.
Can I get a medical certificate for work online?
Yes. Complete the online application with your symptoms, work absence and requested dates. If Dr Walia considers a certificate clinically appropriate after review, it is emailed as a PDF with his AHPRA details, a unique reference and a QR verification code.
Do I need a phone or video call for an online medical certificate?
Usually no. Dr Walia reviews the details you submit in the online form. If more information is needed before a safe decision can be made, you may be contacted.
Is this the right page for a doctor certificate online?
Yes. In Australia, people may call the document a medical certificate, doctor certificate, doctors certificate or Dr certificate. DoctorsNote uses the medical certificate wording on the issued document and the certificate is reviewed by an AHPRA-registered GP.
Can I get a cheap medical certificate online?
The sick leave certificate assessment fee is $14.95 for one or two days. There is no subscription and no per-day charge. If you searched for the cheapest online medical certificate Australia option, the important point is that low price should still include real GP review, clear doctor details and employer verification. Payment starts clinical review; approval is not guaranteed.
Can I get a same-day medical certificate online?
DoctorsNote commits to reviewing applications within 24 hours rather than guaranteeing same-day issue. Dr Walia reviews the application and, when clinically appropriate, emails the certificate after approval. The assessment costs $14.95 for one or two days.
Can I buy a medical certificate online?
You can pay $14.95 to apply for clinical review, but you cannot simply buy approval. Dr Walia assesses every application and issues a certificate only when clinically appropriate. Issued certificates identify the GP and include a reference and QR code for employer verification.
Can I get an online medical certificate anywhere in Australia?
Yes. DoctorsNote issues online medical certificates in every state and territory — NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory — reviewed by an AHPRA-registered Australian GP and valid nationwide under the Fair Work Act 2009.
