How DoctorsNote fits with the Fair Work Act 2009
Most Brisbane workers who take sick or carer’s leave will be covered by the Fair Work Act 2009 and a relevant modern award or enterprise agreement. Under the Fair Work Act 2009, employers can request evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person that you were genuinely unable to work.
A certificate from an AHPRA-registered GP can be used as evidence to support sick or carer’s leave under the Fair Work Act 2009, with acceptance determined by your employer. DoctorsNote certificates are issued by an AHPRA-registered GP and state that, in the doctor’s clinical opinion, you were unfit for work or study for the specified period. The diagnosis itself is not disclosed on the certificate, supporting your privacy.
Because each employer and agreement can have its own evidence requirements, it is important to check your Brisbane workplace policy, especially for:
- large Queensland public sector employers (e.g. Queensland Government departments, Metro North or Metro South Health)
- health, aged care and disability services based in Brisbane and SEQ
- unionised worksites covered by detailed enterprise agreements
- labour-hire and agency roles across construction, logistics and hospitality
DoctorsNote cannot advise on your specific employment rights. If you are unsure, consider speaking with your HR team, union, or an employment law service about how the Fair Work Act 2009 and your agreement apply to you.
