Depression affects over 1 million Australians each year. Under Fair Work Australia, employees are entitled to sick leave for mental health conditions, including depression. Employers cannot demand details about your diagnosis — they can only request a medical certificate confirming you are unfit for work.

How to get a medical certificate

If depression is affecting your ability to work or study, you can apply for a medical certificate online. A registered Australian GP will review your application and, if approved, issue a certificate valid for 1–2 days.

2. Describe how your condition is affecting your ability to work or study
3. A registered GP reviews your application within 24 hours
4. Your certificate is delivered via email and text
