Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about carer’s leave certificates.

How do I get a carer’s leave certificate online in Australia?

Apply through doctorsnote.com.au, complete the 5-minute online form, and an AHPRA-registered Australian GP reviews your application. The certificate is delivered by email within 24 hours of approval. $14.95 flat fee — no appointment, no waiting room.

What’s on a carer’s leave certificate?

A DoctorsNote carer's leave certificate includes your name as the carer, the name and date of birth of the person you are caring for, the dates of unfitness, and the issuing AHPRA-registered GP's name and registration number. It does not disclose the medical diagnosis of the person being cared for.

Is an online carer’s leave certificate valid in Australia?

A certificate issued after an appropriate review by an AHPRA-registered Australian GP can be used as evidence. Fair Work says medical certificates and statutory declarations are examples of evidence, but the evidence must convince a reasonable person that the employee was genuinely entitled to the leave. Workplace policies, awards or registered agreements may also specify reasonable evidence requirements.

How many days of carer’s leave am I entitled to in Australia?

Full-time employees receive 10 days of paid personal/carer's leave per year, while part-time employees receive it pro rata; unused leave carries over. Casual employees can access 2 days of unpaid carer's leave per permissible occasion. Full-time and part-time employees may access unpaid carer's leave when they have no paid balance left. See the Fair Work Ombudsman for the current rules and check any applicable award or agreement.

Who can I take carer’s leave for?

You can take carer's leave to care for an immediate family member or any member of your household who is ill, injured, or affected by an unexpected emergency. Immediate family includes your spouse, de facto partner, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling — whether biological, step, adopted, or in-law.

Is a carer’s leave certificate the same as a medical certificate?

Yes. The terms "carer's leave certificate", "carer's medical certificate", "medical certificate for carer's leave" and "carer's note" all refer to the same document — issued by an AHPRA-registered Australian GP confirming you need leave to care for an ill or injured family or household member.

Can I get a backdated carer’s leave certificate?

No. DoctorsNote does not issue backdated certificates. Carer's leave certificates are issued for today or tomorrow only. This policy ensures clinical and legal integrity, in line with Australian Medical Association guidance.

How long does it take to get a carer’s leave certificate?

Within 24 hours of applying. An AHPRA-registered Australian GP reviews your application and emails the certificate once approved. Most applications are reviewed the same day they are submitted.
